Rebels Massing in Great Numbers—Will Michigan Answer?
Confederate registrations are said to exceed Union six to one. Do not be a Buell—come before the first shot is fired!
Alarming intelligence reaches us from Jackson, where the forces of the rebellion are said to be gathering in numbers which ought to awaken every loyal man in the State. The report is that Confederate registrations now exceed those of the Union by no less than six to one!
Six to one! Are the loyal men of Michigan prepared to permit such an army to assemble within our borders without opposition? The Jackson Civil War Muster, where the armies of North and South will meet in a representation of the great battle of Shiloh, will take place on the 22d and 23d of August. We call upon every true man to answer the call and strengthen our lines.
Do Not Be a Buell
Do not be like General Buell, who, it is said, came up after the battle was well nigh over. Nor be like General Lew Wallace, who went in search of his command and was not seen again until the fighting was done.
Come in time to form your company, learn your duties, hear the drums—and shoot at something! The enemy will not wait for us.
The Rebel Host
Our information may be unconfirmed—but we are told the Confederates outnumber us six to one. They are drilling daily and make great preparations.
Whether six to one or not, this we know: if they have the numbers, we must have the spirit. Michigan has furnished soldiers before—she can furnish more.
Orders to the Loyal Public
Let every old soldier shoulder his musket once more. Let every young man who loves the Union come forward. Let the cavalry saddle up, the artillery polish their pieces, and the infantry be ready.
Come for the Union! Come for Michigan! Come for your comrades! Come to Jackson! Your country calls!
The Great Shiloh Engagement
Two days of hard fighting are expected—Saturday the 22d and Sunday the 23d of August—representing the famous battle upon the Tennessee. Let our officers study their maps, and our men their duties. We shall need steadiness, courage, and ammunition.
Evening Dissipation
After the labors of the day, a Military Ball will be held. Remember: the Virginia Reel does not excuse a man from picket duty, nor do two left feet. Come dance—then stand your watch!
Distinguished Speakers
Among those expected to address the public are President Abraham Lincoln, President Jefferson Davis, Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, and other gentlemen of note. Come hear them if you can agree with either; if not, come and judge for yourselves.
